Christmas Cookies

I’m all done with tests!  And today, instead of briefing cases or studying for exams, I made this:

Last weekend we made some sugar cookies, and the E-man really got into it!

Tomorrow is Pajama Day at daycare!

One (mostly) down, 5 to go!

I just finished the last class of my first semester of law school.  Just a year ago I wasn’t sure which law school I would be attending, and now here I am with only 5 semesters left.  I still have three (very difficult and challenging) finals over the course of the next 12 days, but it feels really good to be done with classes.

The E-man, Superhero

An anonymous source, who happens to live with me, informed me that my last few posts have been a little dry, so I thought I’d liven it up a little.  Below is a picture I happened across just a few days ago:

Since I call my son E-man here on the blog, I thought this was a pretty cool find!  E-man was a short-lived comic that originally ran from 1973 to 1975, although there have been various reincarnations.  There’s even a fan page.  E-man was a “packet of energy” from a sun that adopted human form here on earth.  He used the alias Alec Tronn.  His best friend was fellow superhero Nova Kane, a graduate student/exotic dancer.

Which FRCP are you?

I have to admit, I am and always have been a geek. Luckily “geek” is cool right now. When I saw this quiz I had to try it out.

The FRCP, or Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, are a long list of court procedures for civil suits in Federal courts. The FRCP, promulgated by the U.S. Supreme Court and approved by Congress in 1938, were authorized by the 1934 Rules Enabling Act. From time to time the Rules are modified, such as the modification/addition of e-discovery rules which went into effect last Friday. This short quiz informed me that I, like 8% of quiz-takers, am most like FRCP 11. Beyond the boring effect of forcing attorneys to sign pleadings and motions, Rule 11 requires that attorneys be honest in pleadings and motions and avoid frivolous lawsuits. Rule 11 also allows the judge to impose sanctions which are completely at the court’s discretion.

Which Federal Rule of Civil Procedure Are You?

YOU ARE RULE 11!

You were designed to make sure that attorneys in federal cases make reasonable inquiries into fact and law before submitting pleadings, motions, or other papers. You were a real hardass in 1983, when you snuffed out all legal creativity from federal proceedings and embarassed well-meaning but overzealous attorneys. You loosened up a bit in 1993, when you began allowing plaintiffs to make allegations in their complaints that are likely to have evidenciary support after discovery, and when you allowed a 21 day period for the erring attorney to withdraw the errant motion. Sure, you certainly won’t get any brownie points for being outgoing, but you keep things on the up and up. It’s pretty clear that the whole operation would fall apart without you around.
Take this quiz!

Christmas approaches

We still haven’t had any appreciable accumulation of snow here in Central New York, which is pretty unusual so far into the season.  Last year by this time, we’d already had a major storm which dropped a foot of snow.  The forecast for today is predicting a few inches, but we’ll see.

We had a busy holiday weekend.  On Saturday morning we hauled out the Christmas decoration totes and started some decorating, including the Christmas village that my wife loves to set up every year.  Then we drove out to Hafner’s Nursery and picked out out a tree.  While we were there we picked out a wreath for the front door and since it was freezing we bought a coney from a stand.  It sure did hit the spot!

Yesterday, I spent the day studying for exams.  My stress level is pretty high right now, but I’m trying my best not to let it get the better of me!  Last night we went to Lights on the Lake, which is a two-mile drive through Christmas light displays in a park alongside Onondaga Lake.  The E-man loved it, pointing and yelling and making animal noises the entire time.  It was a wonderful weekend.
